let me start the ball rolling by congratulating the organisers for a successful event.
since this is a first ever indoor event, there were a lot of things that were within our control
we were not too worried about the rain and the sun
our darts have more range and accuracy
dart recovery is much better and much faster
games were played in air-conditioned comfort
we could control the lighting (perhaps we can play a night ops next time)
all the above factors made what is today, a GREAT NERF WAR
it's good to see all the factions coming in great numbers. there were at least 60 people here today. getting that big a group organised is always a challenge but angelus and benstone did a great job, with the help of the respective captains.
first game - free for all (i call it a royal rumble)
all 60 players lined up and fight till the finish. it was suppose to be a warm up game but to me it was the most intense! your buddy could turn out to be your enemy. applying melee rules also made it even more difficult to stay alive. needless to say, i was eliminated very quickly as there were darts flying EVERYWHERE. it was raining foam darts!
2nd game - save the hostage
i like this game as it simulates a real rescue mission. team tactics also came into play and the team i felt that did the best was TNF. this game is about 15 men team going in to rescue 5 hostages with 15 hostage takers guarding the safe house. after elminating the 15 guards and rescuing the hostages, the 15 men extraction team (or whoever is left) will have to face the remaining waves of attacks from the hostage takers reinforcements, which easily 30 men and above with automatic weapons. it was almost a suicide mission and many teams could not make it thru to the end. but TNF did it with men to spare! well done
3rd game - invasion
using cardboard boxes, the organisers built a fort that one team will have to defend till the very last dart. invaders will do all they can to breech their defense. the invaders out number the defenders 3 to 1 in some cases. to even out the game, the invaders will land on the "shore"in waves of 5, 10 and finally 15. again, success of this campaign will depend on the clever use of snipers, infantry and heavy artillery (in the form of stampedes and vulcans) melee plays a big part as part of the rules state that only melee weapons can deflect darts hence they will be able to cross enemy lines much faster than conventional blasters.
again, TNF proves to be a formidable force defending the fort and eliminate the waves and waves of invaders. the other teams did well too though eventually losing the fortress, they did put up a good fight and took many men down before falling themselves.
when it was the GEARS defending the fort, both side took heavy casualties but using sheer numbers and a shield man, their iron clad defense was finally broken.
i find the last game the best as it's a full on assault simulating the D-day normandy landing. very realistic and the success of the invasion not only depend on individual wit and skill but also the planning and mobilization skills of the captains.
my thoughts
the participants were very supportive and relatively orderly. some of the younger players might get restless and get distracted easily while organisers get ready for the next game. in this aspect, i would like to suggest tat in between games, all blasters should be holstered and melee weapons sheaved. in this way, all the participants can pay more attention to the organisers and get things going faster and smoother.
on the way home, i did hear some players lament about losing darts during the games. since this is a indoor game and no darts will be lost in the drain or grass, dart recovery should be almost 100%. i did notice that after each game, there are some players who start picking up darts right away and put them into their clips. for this i would like to suggest that
after each game, organiser must insist that ALL blasters and ammo be left back in their respective camps before the picking of darts. no one should put darts in their pockets or clips during the picking up process.
EVERYONE should help to pick up ALL the darts and not just their darts. all darts retrieved should be placed in a centre location and then sorted out under supervision. i am not saying that anyone here is taking other people's darts but there are cases that people might take darts by mistake
during the registration, other than name and team, we should register their blaster and dart markings. once done, if anyone is caught take and KEEPING darts that do not belong to them should be given a warning.
i tend to put more emphasis on the darts as i know darts are NOT cheap in brunei especially streamlines. which is why extra effort should be put into making sure all players get their darts back.
the last is a common problem. we get that in Singapore too. everyone is only concern with picking up their own darts. Once they found their darts, the rest is not their problem. More than once, i was picking darts from under the players feet. the dart was right in front of them and they jus stood there. after a few games, it did become quite frustrating for me and i kinda lost it for a moment ;D pre-game and post-game rules are just as important as game-play rules. organisers should make it a point to let everyone know that the success of any game depends on the players. it goes not only the picking up of darts, it's also
cleanliness (the water point was all wet with empty cups thrown all over the table)
care of rental equipment and location (the stage curtains was slightly ripped, but it could be there before we arrived. i'm not sure)
graciousness and consideration (parking one car in 2 lots, removing stacked chairs and not returning them back into the stack after the games)
however, all in all, i still say the nerfers that came today are good, hence making today a really unforgettable NERF war for me. i will have a lot of good stories to share with my friends in Singapore.
Once again, thank you TNF for renting the perfect location for us and also the admins at UNB for organising and last, to GEARS who help the rest of us tidy up the place after when most people have left.
hip hip HURRAY!
